I’ve been admiring the fur fashion movement from afar for over year. (Remember my Fur Lusting last year?) Since I’m still lusting now that winter is around the corner, I decided to join the party and add some fur to my life. Enter the oversized faux fur collar–I freaking love the way they can totally change the look of a coat, and instantly make it feel brand new again! The velvet lining not only adds a luxurious touch, but its textured surface also helps keep the collar in place around the neckline. The result? A cozy fur accessory to jump start your winter wardrobe!
Materials:
- 1/2 yard of faux fur
- 1/2 yard of velvet
- Permanent marker
- Scissors
- Sewing Pins
- Needle and coordinating thread
1. Hand draw 1/2 “boomerang” shape as shown above on the back side of the faux fur. Use a straight straight vertical line to close off the “boomerang” shape (This will be the fold line.)
Step 2. Cut along drawn lines except the straight vertical line.
Step 3. Fold the cut out 1/2 “boomerang” on the vertical fold line, and outline the shape with a permanent marker.
Step 4. Pull back the cut out portion to reveal the other half of the “boomerang,” and cut along marker lines. Do not cut the fold line.
Step 5. Hem the collar by folding in the edges 1/2″-1″. Pin into place.
Step 6. Use a large whip stitch to sew the hem in place.
Step 7. Trace outline of collar onto backside of velvet lining.
Step 8. Cut out velvet collar lining.
Step 9. Use 1/4″ seam allowance to hem velvet lining as you did in with the fur collar in Step 5. Pin into place.
Step 10. Use whip stitch to hold the hem in place as you did in Step 6.
Step 11. Place fur collar right side facing downward on work surface, and velvet lining on top of fur with the right side facing upward, so that wrong sides are facing one another. Pin into place and use the same whip stitch to attach the two layers.
Layer around your coat collar, and voila!
