UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena will be sworn in as a Member of Parliament before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, at the Parliamentary session on July 27.

 The Elections Commission on Friday had issued the relevant gazette notification nominating Vajira Abeywardena as the National List Member of the United National Party, which became vacant due to the swearing in of Ranil Wickremesinghe as the President.

Acting in accordance under Section 64(5) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981, read with the provisions of the Constitution, the Election Commission noticed through the Gazette Extraordinary that Vajira Abeywardena has been nominated to fill the vacant seat created following Ranil Wickremesinghe assuming office as President.

According to the letter in writing by the Secretary General of the Parliament Dhammika Dassanayake to Elections Commission Chairman recently stating that a vacancy has arisen due to the swearing in of Ranil Wickremesinghe as President, the Elections Commission informed the United National Party Secretary to nominate a qualified member for the said vacancy. The UNP Secretary has nominated Vajira Abeywardena.
