Using macOS on VM (intel): The Easy Way

If you wish to try out few things like xCode or wish to create a Hackintosh but don’t have access to a Mac, you need to first run macOS on VM.

Remember: A VM or virtualized machine will not have the same graphics performance as a real Mac or a Hackintosh.

This guide is for host systems with Intel processors only. Stay tuned for Ryzen guide.

Things you’ll need

• An intel machine with Windows OS (laptop or desktop, dual core or better, recommended 8GB of RAM and 40+GB Free storage-SSD preferred)
• Torrent client
• Winrar or any other program to deal with .rar files
• Internet connection (You’ll need to download approximately 7 GB of data)
• A phone/tablet/another laptop/PC to watch LinusTechTips in between

Step by step guide to use macOS on VM

Step 1 Download and install VMWare Player

Download and Install VMWare Player from VMWare Official Website.

Step 2 Download macOS Image

Download the macOS High Sierra Image using the following magnet link. This image has all the tools we need already included, so no tweaking required there.

Step 3 Extract the Folder

Once the download is complete, extract the .rar file.

Step 4 Run the Patcher

There are some tweaks to be made to the VMWare Player to get macOS running. Open the VMWare Unlocker folder from the extracted .rar file and run Unlocker.exe.

Step 5 Enable BIOS Settings

Make sure you have following options enabled in BIOS of your laptop/desktop.

VT/d = ON
intel virtualization = ON

Step 6 Start the VM

1. Open VMWare Player
2. Click Open a Virtual Machine
3. Navigate to the location of extracted torrent folder and open in
4. Click Sierra folder
5. Double Click macOS Sierra
6. Click Play Virtual Machine

Step 7 Change the language to English

If the default language in the VM is not English, you can set it by following these steps:

1. Open System Preferences
2. Click Language & Region (flag icon in the first row)
3. Click [+] button
4. Select English U.S.
5. Press the blue button
6. Close System Preferences
7. Press blue button when it prompts you to restart
8. Virtual system will restart

Tech tip: If you wish to create Hackintosh, you’ll need the root password to run any command with root permissions.

The root password for image downloaded from given magnet link is “123” (without the quotes).
