Using Black and White in Your Home Decor

By Simone Design Blog @HomeSpire

Hello everyone,

Another week has started. I hope you had a great fun-filled weekend. We were homebound, doing much-needed home projects and yard work. It’s raining leaves! Fall is definitely here.

We all know that there are certain home decor colors that are timeless. One home decor color combination that has grown significantly in popularity is black and white. Most people tend to shy away from using black and white in their spaces because they think the space will look monotonous and unimaginative. That doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. When used with the right lighting, accent pieces and furnishings, a room using black and white colors exudes a bright, clean look. With furniture design, your choices are unlimited–it’s all dependent on the style of home decor. Before committing to any one style for your furnishings, experiment with different styles first. You want to find the right style to go well with your black and white decor scheme.

The color white represents calm and serenity, while black is dramatic and full of excitement. These two colors create a very striking effect when used to decorate a room. When determining the overall look of a room, think about where to place your objects. Create a focal point; it can be an accent wall painted in black or it can be a large black framed mirror to a white wall. Another way to approach this color scheme is to leave the walls white and add touches of black accent pieces.

As any designer will tell you, lighting is one of the most important elements in your home. Don’t just depend on natural lighting–use overhead lights, lamps or scones. I think it’s especially true for this color combination, as black absorbs light quite easily. By adding additional lighting, you’ll create a space that’s both warm and inviting.

To create a contrast and make a small room look bigger, choose the right accessories. Small spaces colored in black and white can look modern and elegant.

In a bathroom, black and white look great together. It’s very common to find bathroom fixtures already finished in white. This opens up many possibilities for using black, from wall paper to storage closets.

If you’re still unsure of using this color combination in your main living areas, consider using it in a your hallways or private workspaces where it gets less visibility.
