Uses for Baby’s Breath

By Simon Crowther @prestigeflower

Baby's breath is also known as gypsophila and these tiny flowers can have a huge impact when they are used in the right way. Depending on the effect you are trying to create, baby's breath can be used in a wide variety of ways.

Probably the most popular use for baby's breath is as a filler flower. These dainty blooms can easily be split up into small clusters and slipped in between the other flowers in a bouquet. They look particularly beautiful when paired with red roses and just a touch of dark, green foliage.

They can also be used in handheld bouquets and posies. Bridal bouquets can contain these fillers if the bride wants to add some variety in colour and texture. Plus, they won't break the bank so that's an added bonus!

For special events, women often enjoy adding baby's breath to their hair. They are almost like tiny floral gems that give your hairstyle that little something special. They can also be added to corsages and boutonnieres if you like.

Like many other flowers, you can even make a floral display that consists solely of baby's breath! You will need a significant number of stems in order to achieve the desired appearance but it's definitely worth it! You can also choose whether you want to make a tall arrangement or short arrangement and, in this case, you will need to cut the stems so that the flowers just peer out the top. Unlike other flowers, like roses, baby's breath stems do not need to extend too far above the vase. Think of these arrangements as a kind of floral ball that appears to be resting on top of the top of the vase.

Just like any other type of flower, it's also important that these blooms be kept away from direct sunlight, wind, sources of heat or air conditioners and properly maintained. Change the water regularly and trim the stems as needed. If you notice any stems starting to wilt or die, remove them from the bunch or they will cause the other flowers to spoil faster.
