“The global epidemics show that we need more international cooperation to fight the pandemic, not less cooperation,” Martina Fietz, spokesperson for the government, told a press conference. 'Angela Merkel.

“The work of WHO is extraordinary, especially in periods like this, it is important that it is supported and sufficiently funded”, she argued, adding that the American withdrawal constituted a “setback for international cooperation”.

The United States confirmed on Tuesday that it had officially notified the United Nations of the American withdrawal from WHO, accused by Washington of having delayed responding to the coronavirus pandemic.

The notification will be effective at the end of a period of one year, that is to say on July 6 2021, specified several officials of the United States government, largest contributor to the organization.

Joe Biden, Democratic candidate for the US presidential election in November, has vowed to reverse this “on the first day” of his presidency if he wins.

Donald Trump had announced at the end of May “to end the relationship” between his country and the WHO, which he accuses since the beginning of the pandemic of being too lenient with China, where the new coronavirus appeared in December before spreading across the planet.

He also accuses the boss of the WHO, the Ethiopian Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, of having failed to reform the organization.
