U.S., U.K. and Australia Announce New Security Partnership for Indo-Pacific

A week before the meeting of the Quad leaders in Washington DC, Biden administration, on September 15, announced a new trilateral security partnership for the Indo-Pacific, between Australia, U.K. and aukus). As part of this, Australia will get a nuclear-powered submarine with the help of U.K. And A.S.

Trilateral grouping was officially announced by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison who joined President Yoe Joe Biden in the White House through the video-link. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also participated in the launch through a video link.

“The future of Indo-Pacific will have an impact on all our future,” said Mr. Morrison, added that the aukus would increase Australia’s contribution to other partnerships, including Quad.

“We must be able to overcome the current strategic environment in this region, and how it can develop, because of the future of each of our countries – and indeed the world – survives the eternal indo-Pacific free and develops in decades in front, “Mr. Biden.

“I just want to underline it very clearly this partnership is not intended or about one country, it is about advancing our strategic interests, enforcing orders based on international rules, and promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific,” An official said on Wednesday.

This initiative, officials said, in response to Australia who want to improve their play in connection with maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region. The partnership is also an English “down payment” making a decision to engage deeper with the Indo-Pacific, according to one official, who said the partnership was “a fundamental decision … who binded, convincingly, Australia of the United States and England for generations.”

Asked about this trilateral framework extension in the future, an administrative official said the aukus “very rare” and “one off” and that the US shared this kind of technology on a nuclear-powered submarine was just done once – with England and almost 70 years ago.
