The dismissal of the appeal effectively denies them the opportunity to see their medals presented to them during a ceremony in public at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
A petition in opposition to the International Olympic Committee by nine-figure skaters from theUnited States seeking to have their silver medals handed out at a public ceremony has been thrown out.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport announced on Saturday following a hearing via video in Beijing.
The world’s sports arbitrator looked at an application from skaters Evan Bates, Karen Chen, Nathan Chen, Madison Chock, Zachary Donohue, Brandon Frazier, Madison Hubbell, Alexa Knierim, and Vincent Zhou -All of whom took home silver medals in the figure skating team event but were ruined with a positive for doping the 15-year-old Russian Kamila Valieva.
In the wake of an uproar, Olympic officials decided that they would not conduct a medal ceremony for the figure skating team event. That means athletes like U.S. figure skaters will quit the Olympics without medals.
Nine U.S. skaters filed an appeal seeking to overturn the decision made by Olympic officials. They claim that the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee was not a participant in the hearing, which caused the appeal to be dismissed on Saturday, as per the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The arbitrator did not detail the decision but said it would announce it in the days ahead.
The decision to dismiss the appeal means that it is likely that U.S. skaters will receive their medals months, perhaps even years from now, when the case of Valieva is pushed through appeals and hearings.
Valieva has led Valieva’s Russians into victory at the group event; however, if the result is reversed, likely, the U.S. would eventually receive gold medals.
