U.S. companies will be allowed to work with Huawei on developing 5G standards under a new rule announced Monday by the U.S. Department of Commerce.
"The United States will not cede the leadership of global innovation," said US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross in a statement released on Monday. "The department is committed to protecting the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States by encouraging American industry to fully engage and advocate for American technologies to become international standards.

The amendment comes more than a year after the U.S. placed Huawei on a commercial blacklist that prohibits U.S. companies from selling technology and parts to the Chinese telecommunications company. While it hurt Huawei's business, it also created confusion as to whether U.S. companies could participate in organizations that set industry standards.
"This action is intended to ensure that Huawei's placement in the list of entities in May 2019 does not prevent US companies from contributing to important standards-setting activities," the statement said on the ministry's website. Trade.
Huawei says its position remains unchanged in light of the rule change.
