The policy architect behind the Susan G. Komen decision to defund Planned Parenthood is from Upper Marlboro: WHO KNEW?!!!
Karen Handel is the Sr. Policy Advisor for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Handel describes her upbringing in Upper Marlboro as very rough. She left the area at the age of 17, fleeing an alcoholic mother who at one point, pulled a gun on her. Before leaving, she attended Prince George’s Community College and Maryland Univeristy. After marrying, her husband took a job offer in Georgia and they moved. Handel’s 2010 run for Governor of Georgia was endorsed by Mitt Romney and (gasp) Sarah Palin. One of Handel’s running platforms was anti-abortion and included a promise to defund Planned Parenthood, so I guess after she lost the governor’s race, I guess she continued her passion for defunding the Planned Parenthood in her new position with Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Honestly, if you’re anti-abortion then go for it; I support you. But why are you snatching grants from Planned Parenthood that are used to screen underprivileged women for cancer? It’s that kind of rabid like skewed focus that gets the pro-life participants painted as a bunch of puritanical boobs. That and instances when I encounter them standing at my subway station heckling Black women as they exit the subway escalator with “Michelle Obama had an abortion! Your President kills children!” Oh yes, a stable bunch you be.
