OMA3 (Open Metaverse Alliance for Web3), a group of companies working together to create standards for the decentralized metaverse, has revealed that Unstoppable Domains, the best platform for digital identity, will join its board of directors. Alien Worlds, Animoca Brands, Dapper Labs, Metametaverse, Sandbox, Space, Superworld, and Upland are additional OMA3 board members.
As a leader in OMA3, Unstoppable Domains is leveraging its experience in Web3 domains to aid OMA3’s efforts to standardize the use of Web3 land domains in the metaverse. The ultimate goal of the association is to create an open market for Web3 land domains to make it easier to move around in the metaverse. The creation of standards for Web3 land domains will be spearheaded by the OMA’s Portaling and Mapping Working Group.
Web3 land domains are a type of global address that spans metaverse worlds. They are different from app-specific addresses because they can be used to point straight to a user’s virtual land or parcel. The key benefit of this method is the interoperability and universality of the address. For instance, Web3 land domains will allow individuals to teleport not only to a different planet within the metaverse but to a specific area in it as well.
Standardization is important to avoid conflicts and duplications among various implementations due to the cross-world nature of Web3 land domains. Additionally, standardization will ensure a consistent user and developer experience.
Unstoppable Domains will also work with the Web3 Domain Alliance to coordinate initiatives between the two business alliances. The Web3 Domain Alliance, a member-led and member-driven organization, was established in 2022 with the goal of enhancing the technological and governmental settings for blockchain naming service customers.
