The country had 60 179 COVID cases – 19 additional in recent 24 hours at 20 h 24 local Saturday 24 GMT Sunday), according to the Baltimore, Maryland-based institution.

There were also 1051 deaths during this day.

The United States has now identified more than 4.6 million contaminations and 61 319 deaths, making it the hardest-hit country in the world.

These new figures are released as Florida prepared for the arrival of Tropical Storm Isaias, which is expected to revert to a hurricane as it approaches the virus-ravaged southeastern part of the state.

Of the US states, only California, which has more than double the population of Florida by approximately 20 million people, has recorded more cases of coronavirus.

Florida reported 179 on Saturday, setting a new record for the state and bringing its death toll from the virus to 6843.

In the midst of an epidemic, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that unless the situation became more threatening, it was better to “just curl up rather than send people on the road” by making them clear out. Especially since shelters are generally crowded and the practice of physical distances is difficult.
