The unemployment rate for January remained 7.9 percent, according to the BLS report issued on February 1, 2013 and the unadjusted U6, which is the total unemployment plus all persons marginally attached to the labor force rose to 15.4 percent from 14.4 percent in December 2012..
The breakdown:
Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (7.3 percent), adult women (7.3 percent), teenagers (23.4 percent), whites (7.0 percent), blacks (13.8 percent), and Hispanics (9.7 percent) showed little or no change in January.
According to the quarterly Mass Layoff Summary, the private nonfarm sector initiated 1,674 mass layoff events in the fourth quarter of 2012 that resulted in the separation of 319,639 workers from their jobs for at least 31 days, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.
