A person suspected to be the main criminal wanted in connection with the recent shooting incident at the Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal in Pettah on May 30 is reported dead following a shoot-out with Police at Bemmulla, Gampaha yesterday morning.
The suspect is said to be an accomplice of notorious underworld figure ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa’.
As reported, a team of officers from the Colombo Crime Division had reached the area on Monday morning to apprehend him. However, he had not been in his residence and had later arrived home by a motorbike without knowing the presence of the police officers.
After seeing the Police, the suspect had fled by the motorbike and he was chased by the officers.
He had then stopped the motorbike and opened fire at the officers after which Police had returned fire towards him as a result of which he had died. The deceased has been identified as 41-year-old Vithanage Joseph. Police are investigating.
