“Under the Shade 1″ / Central Province, Papua New Guinea / June 2013
Being very close to the equator, temperatures in Papua New Guinea can be very humid and really punishing. This is why many Papua New Guineans can be seen congregating under the shade of trees and thatch shades on hot, sunny afternoons.
Travelling to the Central Province with my colleagues in June, I took every opportunity to photograph people and their activities under the shade. I don’t know why but I also like long shadows contrasting with surfaces bathed in bright light. Many of the images in this series have this kind of interplay between shadows and light.
