We don’t need to reiterate how much we loved Stagecoach. Providing so many great memories over the years, there’s still a tinge of sadness that they called it a day last year. At least they left on a high, with ‘Say Hi to the Band’ being pretty much the perfect indie-pop album and one you can return to again and again. When a band breaks up, a whole host of opportunities become available for members to delve into. So it is, Stagecoach’s singer Luke Barham unveils his new project, and debut single ‘I Write’, under the name of Uncle Luc.
Americana-tinged, the song finds Luke offering a world-weary and slightly cynical view of ‘making it’ with the music industry suits: ‘This year, nothing is different, chances of a hit song are getting slimmer, with labels buying hits by the thousand and ton..’. The gentle acoustic strumming offers a more thoughtful sound in line with Stagecoach’s ‘Video Shop’ and there’s also a touch of Supergrass’s vastly underrated ‘Road to Rouen’ in the feel of the song. Clocking in at just over three minutes, it’s a personal and traditional 60s-inspired track with a message that anyone who loves music would do well to remember: ‘I write and you listen, it’s a simple, simple, simple exchange’.
We can’t wait to listen to the entire album later this summer.
