Uber Eats glitch erases the tip option on deliveries

Hundreds of Uber Eats delivery drivers seem to have cut their tips in the past few days. Apparently a bug in the app removed the option for customers to add a tip to their grocery order.

"I was just informed by a customer that the app would not tip them! Support was called and they said they knew this was happening and reminded me that tips were not guaranteed," said a delivery person Username JeddakOfBarsoom, published on Reddit in the subreddit Uber Eats on Monday. "This is unacceptable. We don't do shit without tipping!"

Uber announced on Tuesday afternoon that an incident was known and has since been resolved.

Uber Eats drivers typically earn low, often less than the minimum wage. Tips can make up a large part of their income. A driver driving Muddyducker wrote in the Reddit thread that it was "like day and night. Do you drive 10 miles for $ 3? No way." The situation is even more critical during the novel coronavirus pandemic, as food suppliers are considered essential and do not endanger their health in order to make deliveries.

Drivers and customers have been posting on Twitter and Reddit since late Sunday that the tip option is no longer available in the app. A Reddit thread had more than 121 comments from people complaining about the glitch. Some drivers said Uber customer service told them there was nothing wrong with the app, which means that drivers simply didn't earn tips. While other drivers said Uber recognized the problem. Some drivers still received tips, but far less than usual.

"Damn, I was wondering if only 3 out of 10 deliveries were typed today," wrote Reddit user Warriorpunte. "This is very unusual considering that 121 out of 124 tipped last week."

Drivers and customers posted much the same thing on Twitter. Uber Support's Twitter account said it was investigating the problem. But as of Tuesday morning, some drivers still seem to have trouble getting tips.
