Types Of Kangeroo Paw Flowers

By Simon Crowther @prestigeflower

From the month of August until October, Kangaroo Paw flowers are in bloom.  These wonderfully strange looking flowers are native to Australia and there are a number of different varieties available.  They have been known to be included in various types of flower arrangements including wedding flowers and bouquets.  It is important to make sure with your florist that Kangaroo Paw flowers are available in your area.  There are a number of kinds of Kangaroo Paw flowers so, while you are checking, ask your florist what kind or kinds they stock.

With so many types to choose from, it’s often difficult to make a final selection.  The most popular choices in Kangaroo Paw flowers include the Bush Ranger, Red and Green Kangaroo Paw, Pink Joey and the Tall Kangaroo Paw which is also known as Anigozanthos flavidus.  In fact, many of the popular types of Kangaroo Paw are hybrids of Anigozanthos flavidus and other types.

Looking at the Tall Kangaroo Paw first, their stalks can grow as long as 2m and they are a tough bunch.  They can tolerate various soil conditions and are only really vulnerable to heavy frost.  They come in a wide range of colours.  The most common being a kind of yellow-green combination.  If you are planning on growing this plant in your garden and you want to be sure of the color of its flowers, purchase it while it is in bloom.

The red and green Kangaroo Paw is one of the most dramatic looking of all and it is perfect for bouquets.  Similar to this kind is the Bush Emerald.  The flowers look very much alike but they are easier to grow than the red and green variety.

Pink is a wonderful color to encourage in your garden as well as in bouquets.  The Pink Joey is aptly named for its pink flowers.  While other varieties boast longer stems, this type grows a more modest stem of up to 50cm.  Like the Tall Kangaroo Paw, this variety isn’t too picky when it comes to weather conditions and soil.  In fact, care instructions for the Pink Joey variety are very much the same as for the Tall Kangaroo Paws.

If you live in areas where frost is a regular occurrence each year, you may what to choose a more hardy variety known as Dwarf Delight.  The stems of the flowers grow to approximately 80cm and the colours are a beautiful shade of orange.  If you take care of this plant correctly, they have been known to last as long as 8 years!  In areas moderately affected by frost, feel free to plant the Bush Ranger.  With slightly shorter stalks of approximately 50cm, they will also provide you with some beautiful orange flowers and they are also more resistant to ink disease than many other types.

These are just a few of the more popular types of Kangaroo Paw flowers.  It is always ideal to ask a professional about what is available as cut flowers in your area and what you can consider planting in your garden.
