eBay pays $295 million for TCGplayer, the best place to buy and sell trading cards. In June, the online retail giant bought KnownOrigin, a marketplace for non-fungible tokens.
eBay and TCGplayer haven’t said if the purchase is part of the company’s Web3 strategy, but the fact that TCGplayer is a marketplace for collectibles is very similar to eBay’s goals.
In the new age of NFTs, trading card markets and web3 projects often work together. The NFT-based trading card game VeeFriends Uno Deck was released earlier this year by Mattel Creations and Gary Vaynerchuk.
Uno is a popular card game in the United States. Specially printed decks are used for this game. Meanwhile, 56.5k ETH worth of transactions have been made on VeeFriends, which is a collection of Gary Vaynerchuk’s NFT characters. This is a record.
Several types of blockchain-based games, like Splinterlands, which is based on a trading card game, have been drawn to the Web3 realm. Monday, eBay said the purchase shows how much it cares about trading card fans.
The release says that after the purchase, TCGplayer will still work without any restrictions. Dawn Block, eBay’s vice president of collectibles, said in a news release, “eBay has long been a source of consumer interest in this market and a way for buyers and sellers to talk to each other.
Even though eBay’s trading card service has been around for a while, the purchase shows a growing interest in the market as web3 companies keep putting out products that compete with eBay’s.
TCGplayer thinks that eBay’s history as an e-commerce platform, which started in 2008 as a hobby business, will help it quickly turn into an online marketplace.
The founder and CEO of TCGplayer, Chedy Hampson, said: “eBay may only be interested in showing its commitment to loyal trading card customers. But given the company’s acquisition of KnownOrigin two months before him, and the trading card marketplace’s growing relationship with his NFTs, I draw the same conclusions about the company’s web3 strategy. There will be many people. only time will tell.”
