The Springfield-Greene health department announced on Saturday that a second hairstylist had tested positive for the coronavirus and may have exposed 56 clients in the same Great Clips salon.
The two stylists had symptoms at work, officials said. They did not provide details of the symptoms they had or when they tested positive.
Stylists and clients wore face covers
The two stylists worked from the second week of May to Wednesday. The clients and stylists all wore face covers, said the Ministry of Health. At the time, businesses like hair salons and barbershops were allowed to operate in the state.
"It is the department's hope that, because the face covers were worn throughout this period of exposure, no further cases will occur," he added.
The show kept impeccable records that made contact tracing possible, said Clay Goddard, director of the Springfield-Greene County health department.
But he warned of the risks of overwhelming resources.
"I will be honest with you: we cannot have much more," he said at a press conference. "We cannot make it a regular habit or our capacities as a community will be strained."
Goddard said he was satisfied with the deep cleaning measures taken by Great Clips, adding that he now considers the business to be safe.
"The well-being of Great Clips customers and stylists in the salon is our top priority and proper disinfection has always been an important practice in the cosmetics industry for Great Clips salons. We have closed the salon where the work is being done the employee and he is currently undergoing further sanitation and thorough cleaning, "the business owners said in a statement to CNN's subsidiary, KYTV.
In the United States, more than 96,000 people have died from a coronavirus, where the number of confirmed cases exceeds 1.6 million, according to Johns Hopkins. Missouri has nearly 12,000 cases of infections and more than 650 deaths.
