Two officers from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office noticed people running out of the Lavish Lounge shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday morning, Sheriff Hobart Lewis told a news conference.
Earlier, Lieutenant Jimmy Bolt announced “an active shooter inside the building”.
MM. Bolt and Lewis initially reported that 12 people had been injured, at least four of whom were in critical condition, but Lt. Bolt later reviewed the toll interviewed at a local TV station, WYFF-TV.
No one was arrested and it was not immediately clear whether there were one or more shooters.
The police had certain information, but could not publicly name “a person of interest,” said Lewis, who admitted that the authorities were not sure of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The names of the victims have not been released. These were transported to the Prisma Health hospital in Greenville.
According to Sheriff Hobart Lewis, “a large crowd” attended a concert inside the nightclub. On the Lavish Lounge's Facebook page, rapper Foogiano's performance was announced during the July 4 festivities.
Cases of COVID contamination – 19 have increased in South Carolina. The tests that prove positive are three times higher than the recommended levels.
At the end of at least June, Greenville became the first city in this American state to impose the wearing of a mask or a face cover, but the governor of this state Henry McMaster refused to impose this measure on the greatness of South Carolina.
M. McMaster recalled, however, that restrictions on large gatherings due to the pandemic have not been lifted. Businesses that contravene this rule face criminal charges, he said.
