A week before the Crusaders take on the Chicago Urbanathlon—a running blog.
A new study backs up a fact that running shoe manufacturers have known for a long time; we’ve forgotten how to run.
More specifically, we’ve forgotten how to run correctly.
A study conducted to find the benefits of running barefoot (or nearly barefoot) found that a lot of us could benefit from a refresher course in running technique.
A group of women were asked to switch to running barefoot or in minimalist sports shoes.
The results?
Well, all you heal-strikers out there might want to rethink your running style.
The women who continued to run in the heel-toe fashion encouraged by the modern running shoe reported an increase in injuries.
While those who adjusted their running style to land on the ball of their foot, reported fewer injuries.
The moral of the story?
It’s not to whip off that $100 pair of Nike running shoes that are supposed to make you fly down the streets. While I’m sure true barefoot running is a truly liberating experience; I’m not a fan of glass and other assorted sharp objects, especially when they’re in my feet.
But maybe we can start by putting a little more faith in our feet, and a little less into our footwear.
