I’ve always been a sucker for Twin Shadow’s high-reaching refrains, and as the title reveals, his latest stand-alone single “To The Top” is no exception. Still, this time he goes so far overboard with the arrangement and production that the usual reference points of Bruce Springsteen, Simple Minds and similar 80’s MTV rock, no longer apply. This is more in-line with Foreigner, John Farnham’s “You’re the Voice” or any kitchy leitmotif of a major 80’s Hollywood production of your choice. “To The Top” is a big gestured power ballad, by far most anthem-like track George Lewis Jr ever put to tape. Not necessary a direction I wish for a new Twin Shadow record, but after a long string of impressive YouTube covers, it’s nice to hear new original material from Lewis. He is reportedly in the studio putting down the finishing touches of his third album, to be releases sometime later this year.
