This week’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, is about series we’d like to start, catch up on, or finish. In this post I’m writing about series I’ve started recently. I should tell you I’m pretty bad about starting series and then not continuing them – I’m the same with TV. There’s just too many options to spend years on something you don’t love. I start series all the time, rather than finish the ones I’m already reading. Sometimes a series just seems to go on too long. Or in some cases, I’ve simply been away from a series so long I feel like it might be too hard to go back to it.
Mystery series:
This year I started two historical mystery series that I can’t wait to read more of. The first is Stacie Murphy’s Amelia Matthews mystery series (the first one is A Deadly Fortune) and the second is Karen Odden’s Inspector Corravan series (the first one is Down a Dark River).
I also really enjoy Sujata Massey’s Perveen Mistry series, about a woman lawyer in India in 1921. I’ve read two, the first one is The Widows of Marabar Hill.
I’ve also really liked Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad, though I’ve gotten into some of the books more than others. I love the depth of her characters and the way she incorporates the stories of the detectives into the murder cases they’re investigating.
Science Fiction and Fantasy series:
I’ve read 2 of 3 books in Mary Robinette Kowal’s Lady Astronaut series. My husband didn’t care for the books, but I like the blend of science fiction, history, and alternate history.
I’ve read 2 of the 3 books in the Poppy War series by R.F. Kuang. Those are a big time commitment but I’d like to go back and read the third. It’s maybe been too long since I’ve been away though.
I’m reading the second book in Anne Bishop’s The Others series and I really like the world she’s built.
Earlier this year I received an ARC of Not the Witch You Wed by April Asher. It was such a fun story and a good romance that I’m looking forward to the next in the series, Not Your Ex’s Hexes. I like the lighter approach to fantasy and romance.
Romance:
I’m loving the Bromance Book Club series by Lyssa Kay Adams. There’s a cheesiness to these books about men struggling with romance, but I like that Adams writes about difficult issues and I love the trend of poking fun at romance tropes. And the cover art makes me laugh.
Belles of London by Mimi Matthews and League of Extraordinary Women by Evie Dunmore: I love historical romances with a lot of well-researched history, and these books are perfect for me. I’ll be reading the next ones as soon as they come out.

Those are some of the series I’ve started up fairly recently and I hope to continue with. These are comfort reads for me; in times of stress I turn to books from writers I already know I like, with characters or worlds I’m already familiar with. Are you reading any of these?
