Turnagain Lane: The Saturday Street
The Saturday Street is our NEW weekly series in which we unlock the stories behind the names of London's famous thoroughfares. It's compiled by London Walks guide Karen – listed by Travel + Leisure magazine as The World's Greatest Tour Guide. You can find Karen on Saturdays guiding her Old Westminster and British Museum walks. If you've got a London street query or suggestion, email Karen at the usual address
Turnagain Lane EC4
Location: The City of London
Fabled the world over as being named for Dick Whittington who turned back at Highgate, thus reneging on the foolish and rash decision to leave London. A great tale, but sadly not true. The road once led to the Fleet River, but without a bridge at the end. Anyone wishing to cross the water, therefore, had to – you guessed it – turn again.
