TURN BACK TUESDAY- RUNAWAY MAGIC BY DEBORAH GORDON
Runaway MagicRunaway Magic by Deborah Gordon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Runaway Magic by Deborah Gordon was originally published in 1996 by Avon publishing.
This a historical/paranormal romance and is 371 pages in length. (paperback version)
Susannah,"Sukie", is a school teacher in Hong Kong. She is concerned about one of her students when her father, Luke pulls her out of Sukie's school. Luke believes girls have no real use for educations and his daughter would be just as well off in a finishing school.
Angry and frustrated, Sukie performs a little magic to get Luke to reconsider. But, the entities decide to have a little fun and Luke becomes rather enchanted with Sukie.
Luke is a very analytical scientist. He doesn't believe in magic. He also thinks that women are inferior to men.
Sukie was once told that someday she would marry and this man's attributes were described to Sukie. So, the more time she spends with Luke the more convinced she is that he couldn't possibly be the one that she was told about.
So, when circumstances arise that make a marriage between the two the best way to deal with the situation, Sukie has every intention of having the marriage annulled once it's safe to do so.
In the meantime, gossip and rumors surround Luke and his business. Not only that, Luke's former sister in law has set her sights on him. But, while Luke was once in love with Victoria, he can't keep his mind off Sukie.
I have had this book in my collection for a while. Most likely I picked it up at a library sale.
The cover of the book made me think the book was probably light hearted. But, this book was nothing like I thought it would be. For the record, all though this book was published a few years back, there is nothing at all dated about it.
There is a dark tone to the book and some issues were raised that were quite shocking. Not only that, some magical ceremonies were performed that were erotic and today's younger audience would feel right at home. So, in many ways this book was a little ahead of it's time.
There is a time travel element, magical element, exotic locales, and the age old tug of war between the sexes.
This was a very enjoyable read. Fans of historical or paranormal romance will enjoy this one. This one gets an A.
