Donald Trump and the Republicans in Congress were sure that their tax reform law would be widely popular with the American support. They thought it was just what they needed to counter the Democrats in the coming election, and assure they would retain control of Congress. That hasn't happened.
Only 33% of the general public says they support the tax reform law, and only 22% believes they will pay less in taxes as a result of that tax reform. The public is not as stupid as the Republicans thought they were. They saw that over four-fifths of the tax cut benefits went to the very rich and to corporations. And they've also seen that those corporate tax cuts have not resulted in higher wages or more jobs.
This kind of tepid support for the tax plan is not going to help the Republicans this November. It may actually hurt them, because it shows that they care only for the rich and corporations.
The charts above use information found in a new Economist / YouGov Poll -- done between May 20th and 22nd of a national sample of 1,500 adults (including 1,263 registered voters). The margin of error for all adults is 3 points, and for registered voters is 2.9 points.
