“I just wish her the best of luck, frankly,” the president replied to a reporter who asked if he thought she might be giving investigators compromising information about powerful figures Jeffrey Epstein dated.
He added that he had met Ghislaine Maxwell “many times” when she lived in Palm Beach, Florida, where the US president has a residence.
But he did not directly answer the question of whether he thought this figure of the jetset could compromise other personalities, such as ex-President Bill Clinton or Prince Andrew, the son of the Queen of England in the hot seat since the start of the Epstein scandal last summer.
“I did not really follow” this case, said the president. “I don't know the situation with Prince Andrew”.
The second son of Queen Elizabeth II was accused by an alleged victim of Jeffrey Epstein, Virginia Roberts-Giuffre, of having had sex with her, when she had 17 years, allegations he has always denied.
After having disappeared from circulation for more than a year – since the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein in July 2019 and his death in prison the following month – Ghislaine Maxwell , 58 years, was arrested on July 2 and faces up to 35 years in prison if convicted .
Incarcerated without the possibility of bail, the daughter of the late British media mogul Robert Maxwell pleaded not guilty at a hearing in New York on 14 July.
