Donald Trump has decided that he can win in November by pursuing a "law and order" campaign. He is trying to scare American voters by painting the demonstrations over police violence as lawless and violent rioting -- even though 93% of them have been peaceful (with no violence at all).
If you look at the chart above, you might think he's being successful. About 65% of this poll's respondents said maintaining law and order is a major problem. But when you go deeper, you find that's an illusion -- and it's not really helping Trump.
In fact, Biden actually does better on the law and order issue. About 52% say Biden can maintain law and order, while 45% disagree -- a positive net rating of 7 points. But only 48% say Trump can maintain law and order, while 50% disagree -- a negative net rating of -2.
Americans don't like the violence, whether it's from the right or the left -- but they don't think Trump can stop it. In fact, many see Trump as adding to the violence and doing nothing to unite the country behind racial justice.
These charts reflect the results of the new Monmouth University Poll -- done between September 3rd and 8th of a national sample of 867 adults, with a 3.3 point margin of error.
