True Blood Season 5 wraps up tomorrow and it seems every cast member is talking about the crazy finale. Joe Manganiello who plays werewolf Alcide Herveaux on the hit show did a Q&A with HBO Connect after Episode 11 aired. During the session Manganiello answered questions that fans posed for him and he talked about a wide variety of topics including what traits he has in common with Alcide, his upcoming projects and his favorite Alcide moment. He also took time to talk about the season finale but like every other cast member he is very cryptic and only drops hints.
A fan asks Joe if he has any personality traits that are similar to Alcide. Apparently they do have a few things in common in that they both love meat, Joe actually growls like Alcide does and their body temperatures are hot. According to him people have told him all his life that he reminds them of a wolf.
Now we all have heard some bizarre fan stories from the actors of True Blood and Joe has his own to add to the list. Evidently one fan didn’t realize that he’s not actually a wolf and asked him to lick her wound so his saliva would heal her. We suspect she was just looking for an excuse to have him lick her! He also had a male fan who kept posting paintings he made of Joe with no pants on!
Next up Joe is asked if he has read the Sookie Stackhouse novels and whether he prefers “book Alcide” or “show Alcide”:
I think toward the end of season 5 Alcide toughens up quite a bit more than he does in the books and I couldn’t be happier about that. I am also thrilled about working with Robert Patrick. I think our relationship is so much more developed and nuanced that the books and that has been awesome to play.
Here is something you may not know – Joe originally auditioned for the role of Coot from Season 3. He went full tilt in the audition which required a lot of growling and snarling and he didn’t think it went well. He was called back for a second audition for Coot and after told him he wasn’t getting the role but there was a bigger werewolf role and they wanted him to do a chemistry read with Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse). He went in the following week and was told right after that he got the part.
During the interview Manganiello talks about Thunder the wolf who plays his alter ego. While he does not want any pets outside of the stuffed animal that Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) gave him, Thunder lets him pet him and walk him.
Next up Joe is asked if there are any actors on the show that he hasn’t had the chance to work with but would like to. He replies:
I think I’ve worked with everyone except Deborah Ann and Mike McMillian… and seeing as how Mike and I attended the same drama school… that has to happen… but Alcide hates vamps so interacting with either would be rough for him
Joe is asked about his upcoming projects and he talks about the movie we told you about here that he is in training for that stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, and Terrence Howard. He will also be appearing again on ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and he is going to shoot ‘Tumbledown‘ with Jason Sudekis and Rose Byrne all before he returns to True Blood in January. He mentions that there is another project in the works but that it is too early to talk about it.
Now for what we really want to know – what happens during the season finale! There are several questions throughout the Q&A where Joe references that fans need to wait and see what happens during the finale before he can comment further. We assume Alcide returns to challenge J.D. again but nothing is confirmed. When asked what Joe would like to see happen with Alcide going forward into Season 6 he replies:
We can discuss that more once you see the finale… it leaves Alcide in a pretty interesting position and I’m curious to know where he goes next. I personally want to see him beat the living s**t out of everyone thats ever crossed him or ever looked at him funny and then wind up with a girl who has his back. No more of this “maybe” stuff. A real she wolf… or just a fairy who can hold her liquor…
Another fan asks if we will ever see a darker side of Alcide and he replies that we will see that this week! When he’s asked what Alcide will do now that he lost the pack-master challenge Joe says “Get ready for the finale baby!!!”.
