True Blood‘s Janina Gavankar (Luna), is not only a fantastic actress, but she is also a singer as well. Gavankar is set to release her new single ‘Waiting For Godot’ tomorrow and she spoke to Arjan Writes about how her music makes her a better actor, her upcoming album, and the music on True Blood.
Gavankar tells Arjan Writes that she loves heading from the set of a movie or True Blood to the recording studio to work on her music. She feels that working on her music allows her to do some “emotional muscle work” and ultimately it makes her a better actress:
In music I deal with every single issue and thought in my brain and it’s my chance to be completely honest. Music and acting satisfy the same artistic spirit. One informs the other. There are many similarities to creating a song and creating a character, but the performance aspect is very different. In acting you hardly have any control. The only thing you do is show up and play your role. Music is my chance to be a control freak.
Her single, which officially releases August 28th, is entitled ‘Waiting For Godot’ and is named after Samuel Beckett‘s legendary play. The song is described as “a striking electro-pop tune that combines experimental production stylings with Ganvankar’s mesmerizing vocals that will instantly appeal to fans of artists like Imogen Heap and Ellie Goulding”, and comes from her record which she hopes to release in the fall of this year. She describes it has a very personal EP and she says that it can be terrifying given that she makes a career out of being someone else. With her music she has nowhere to hide. She is taking her time to make sure the album is exactly what she wants before she releases it and credits her acting with allowing her to do that:
Because I’m also an actor I don’t have to make music according to anybody’s plan. I can make it when I can when I want to. so I’m taking my time and only release music that at I absolutely love. I don’t have anybody tell me who to work with and I do a lot of work myself. I care so deeply. I’m a perfectionist.
Gavankar goes on to say that she loves the way True Blood honors music by playing a song with the episode’s title in it at the end. She also describes the opening credits as the “coolest scene ever”.
