Troy by @stephenfry

By Pamelascott

The story of Troy speaks to all of us - the kidnapping of Helen, a queen celebrated for her beauty, sees the Greeks launch a thousand ships against the city of Troy, to which they will lay siege for ten whole years. It is a terrible war with casualties on all sides as well as strained relations between allies, whose consequences become tragedies.

In Troy you will find heroism and hatred, love and loss, revenge and regret, desire and despair. It is these human passions, written bloodily in the sands of a distant shore, that still speak to us today.

I loved Fry's books Mythos and Heroes which I listened to in Audiobook so couldn't wait for Troy but decided to get it in hardback this time. I loved Troy. I hope Fry writes more of his own versions of myth. I'd love to read his take on Norse Mythology. Troy like the other two books is written in Fry's straight-forward, conversation verging on chatty tone, so the book is easy to read, and you don't need to wade through dense prose or boring bits. The books are very accessible. I've read quite a lot of Greek mythology and am actually studying it for my Open University degree, so a lot of the characters reference are familiar to me, from my course or from other media such as movies. I was engaged with the story from page one and enjoyed every word. Troy is fantastic.
