This book was a surprising treat. I've read a lot of fiction inspired by Bram Stoker's Dracula and Stoker's novel is among my favourites. I have never read any fiction about the man who inspired Bram Stoker, Vlad the Impaler so this was new territory for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The romance elements between Maria and Nicolae didn't do much for me, but these moments are only sparse and there was plenty of horror, murder, insanity and suspense to hold my attention. The book is very dark at times and a bit gory but so well written and engaging it sort of pulled me along. I thought it was terrific.
