If you travel a lot like I do, you know that anxiety-inducing moment when you realize you’ve forgotten to turn off your data roaming. Your mind fills with expletives as you imagine the mountainous phone bill awaiting you upon your return home, and the worst part is there’s no way to reverse it.

Enter KnowRoaming, an amazing new innovation by a Toronto-based startup. KnowRoaming allows you to dramatically reduce your roaming charges when abroad, using local phone numbers and a prepaid balance that never expires. There are two simple parts: a smart sticker that attaches to your SIM card and an app that lets you manage your account. Once you follow the steps to set up your phone numbers and balance, you can travel without worrying about billion dollar bills waiting in your mailbox.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Louise Stein at KnowRoaming’s beautiful head office and developerspace to discuss the system and see how it works. She put the sticker on my SIM card for me because the applicators are still in production – here’s the pictures to show how it’s done:

Super easy! Just make sure the pegs line up properly. KnowRoaming currently works in 220 countries (wow) and can reduce your roaming charges by up to 85% (WOW)! Yes please. I can’t wait to use this next time I go shopping in Buffalo! :D I bet you want one too - Check out KnowRoaming and sign up for the notification list to get yours when sales start early this year!

Louise was also a trendy techie! I had to get a picture with her and the two office puppies (soooo cute) in front of the funky KnowRoaming logo.

What do you think of KnowRoaming? Where would you use it? Let me know in the comments below!
