Elfreth’s Alley in Philadelphia is a national historical landmark because it’s the oldest street in all of America. Its history dates back to the early 1700s, back in Philadelphia’s earliest days. This alley contains 32 houses, 16 on each side. Although Elfreth’s Alley has existed for over three centuries, its buildings and paths still look as they did back in the settlement period. Because of this, walking through this alley is like stepping into a time machine.

The homes in Elfreth’s Alley are Georgian-styled, as all Philadelphian buildings were during the eighteenth century. These homes are narrow but very efficient in optimizing space. Elfreth Alley’s cobblestone paths have not changed since their birth and continue provide a picturesque touch to the area.

Rather than having backyards, each home would have a courtyard that could be accessed from the alley. These courtyards were covered in bricks instead of grass to make them more practical. But to preserve the scenery, these brick grounds would be accompanied with a large number of green plants, with ivy being the most prominent one.
