Trap- Finally, M. Night Reveals The Twist At The Beginning For A Change
Quick Take: It is a little bit of a spoiler to talk about wht this film really is, but for once, M Night Shyamalan reveals his hand really early on. there’s something oddly refreshing about seeing him throw a twist at the top, because you aren’t quite sure if there will be another, or if he is boldly evolving as a filmmaker. But, the movie centers around a father (Josh Hartnett) who is taking his daughter to a concert for her favorite artist. When he gets there, he notices the heightened security, and figures out it is actually a trap for a serial killer the police figured out would be in attendance. The twist? He is that killer. So, the whole movie is him trying to work his way out of this. Shyamalan’s other daughter (the one who didn’t direct The Watchers), plays the pop star, using her own music, and Hayley Mills shows up as a profiler in this years best casting decision. It can feel silly at times, but I appreciate the risk taking by not having us wait for his shocking big twist at the end, and instead watching our leading man work himself out of a situation we’d rather see him not work out.
