When you think of Everton, you instantly picture David Moyes. The Scotsman has been at Goodison Park since 2002, but there is a distinct possibility he could leave the club in the summer.
Moyes is out of contract at the end of the season and although talks are ongoing, he really is cutting it fine with regards to committing to the club. It now seems he will wait until the end of the campaign.
This creates the possibility that another Premier League team will come in for him of course – Chelsea are likely to be after a new boss for example – but Moyes is determined not to rush his decision.
In fact, he wants to get plenty of information about the future plans of Everton before deciding whether he is the best man to take them forward. Essentially, he wants some money to spend in the summer.
The Toffees have always been reasonably restricted when it comes to their spending and Moyes wants them to let loose to try and compete with top teams in the country.
The former Preston boss is aware that he has an excellent squad to choose from, but wants to increase the strength in depth and take the average age down if he is to remain the Everton manager.
Speaking about his future this week, Moyes said: “I think we are making progress. What I mean is, I’m waiting on some information coming back to me and we’ll talk again when we get all that information.
“I’ve been given some indication of budget, but I’ve not been given the breakdown of it. I’ve been speaking to the chairman for three or four months, it’s been moving along, and all the things I’m doing are for the best of Everton, that’s what I’m trying to do, make the right decision for Everton.
“I know what we are capable of, we have a really good squad, a small squad but one that is getting older and we need to replace that and change it around.
“I hope to have a clearer picture of what will happen and I wouldn’t have thought that would be too much to ask for really, I wouldn’t have thought that was a bad request. I’ve been here 11 years, and I think the club have now come out and said they’re happy with that.
“If people say it is best for Everton Football Club that I stay, then I would agree – I genuinely believe that as well. But I have to make sure that Everton has the best opportunity to try and continue where they are and push on from where they are.”
In the shorter term, Moyes is hoping to finish in the top five this season, thus securing a place in the Europa League at the very least. Perhaps this would convince the current board to splash the cash.
Overall, the next few weeks are massive for Everton. Do they back their current boss in the transfer market and keep their progress going? Or hesitate on spending money and look to go in a new direction?
Fascinating times at Goodison Park.
