If Shakespeare hadn’t first written all of those tragedies he wouldn’t have been able to write a Prospero who says of Caliban “This thing of darkness I acknowledge mine.” It is in the death (or imminent death) of the tragic hero that the playwright/audience acknowledge the hidden impulses that propelled their actions.
