Trading Places in New Abstract Painting

By Abstractartbylt @artbylt

Up to this point I've been drawing with lines on this new abstract painting.  Today I painted solid colors with a brush, playing with the shapes and outlines already on the canvas.

I began by working with the background shapes and colors.  I painted the light yellow into areas of the light and dark taupe, thus "trading places" between the two colors.  This helped break up the fixed rectangular outline of the background sections.  It also added light to some of the outer edges of the painting.

I then followed the same process with the light and darker mauve-taupe sections, bringing these shades into the yellow sections. I used them to disrupt each other, as well.

Next, I began to disrupt the outlines of the Indian yellow and raw sienna circles, filling in areas to counterract the circles as well as to add weight to these colors.

All this took careful painting with a small brush  The changes are subtle, but I think they add to the overall composition.  I will continue working on this canvas tomorrow.
