Safety, education rule the day at Landmark Park event
DOTHAN, Ala. – It was a day filled with wonder and excitement. Wide-eyed youngsters inspected the controls of a helicopter, looked around in an ambulance and toured the inside of a Homeland Security vehicle. These were just some of the more than 30 vehicles that were on display during Landmark Park’s second annual Touch a Truck program, which was held Saturday on the grounds surrounding the park’s Stokes Activity Barn.
Jim Martin, owner of Martin Environmental Services, visits with two youngsters who stopped by to get a look at one of his company’s frontload refuse trucks. More than 30 vehicles and heavy-duty equipment were on site Saturday for Landmark Park’s second annual Touch a Truck event.
For Brandon Hurst, operations manager for Martin Environmental Services, the day provided the opportunity to share some environmental tips with his young visitors.
“Events like Touch a Truck are good for the kids,” Hurst said. “It gives them the opportunity to see what we do in our industry. It gives us an opportunity to show the kids that the environment and the protection of it can develop into a career for them. The garbage world of today is not what it once was. Today, it offers a great environmental career.”
