Tory, London and Reem Among 2013′s Weird Baby Names

Posted on the 27 December 2013 by 72point @72hub

Experts have unveiled a list of the weird and wonderful names given to babies in 2013 –with Tory, London and even Joey Essex’s catchphrase ‘Reem’ now appearing on birth certificates. The illuminating insight into the effect television and celebrity has on monikers we pick for our kids was revealed in Bounty Parenting Club’s annual report of names given to over 370,000 babies born this year.

As well as Tory and London other odd boys’ names include Luck, Lohan and Dallas.

Geordie, the common nickname for a native of the city of Newcastle and associated with the hit MTV reality show Geordie Shore, was also chosen for a baby boy – as was Dior.

Among the more unusual girls’ names, of which Ream was one, was Rosielee – more commonly known as Cockney rhyming slang for a cup of tea – and Puppy, which may cause confusion if yelled in a busy park in the height of the summer months.

Paradise, Vogue, Pinky and Tea were also chosen for little girls in 2013, as were Nirvana – the name of Kurt Cobain’s legendary 1990s rock band, and Peppa, a name millions of children will be familiar with, thanks to the popular cartoon pig.

Lisa Penney, spokeswoman for Bounty said:

“Celebrities are well renowned for choosing unusual names for their off-spring and our records show that some parents are following this trend in an effort to stand out from the crowd with a name no other child is likely to have in the playground.

“It’s great to see parents getting creative with their name choices and with ‘new’ names emerging like Ream and Geordie it seems that the sky’s the limit when it comes to creating something unique.

Whilst whatever a child is called they generally grow up to make it their own – yet parents do need to bear in mind that a really individual name can be a lot to live up to if you don’t grow up to be rich or famous!”

Among the other more unusual boys names were Tiger, who may perhaps have a glittering golf career – and a scandal or two – ahead of him and Tucker, who could well follow in the footsteps of loveable troublemaker Todd Carty from the infamous Grange Hill school.

Victory and Prosper also made the list, two names which could place more than a little pressure on the young mite’s little shoulders.

Porter, Perseus and Kassius were also unusual choices as were Boden – perhaps inspired by the yummy mommy brand – Denley, Bramwell, Denton and Drey.

Original girls’ names which will be reverberating around schools and shopping centres over the next ten years are Zelie, Summer-Ray and Tru.

Other weird and wacky choices were Sorrel, Pheonix, Orchid and Olympia – who may well have been conceived in the celebrations of the previous year’s London Games.

Nolly, Purdy and Pepsi also made the list.

Bounty has also released its annual report of the top 100 boys and girls names of the year.

Jack is back in the top spot after holding the title for a staggering 16 years before Oliver knocked the moniker off its perch in 2010, Harry took over in 2011 and held the title for 2012.

Oliver, Harry, Charlie and Jacob complete the top five most popular names of the year, closely followed by Alfie, Oscar, James, Thomas and Noah.

Top of the girls list is Amelia for the second year running, after knocking Olivia from the top spot back in 2012.

Olivia retains second place, followed by babies called Emily, Ava and Poppy.

Jessica, Isla, Sophie, Mia and Ruby complete the girls’ top 10.

There are some interesting new entries to the top 100 boy’s list, including Teddy, Ronnie, Elliot, Ellis and Kaiden. Joey – no doubt inspired by Towie’s finest – is definitely the one to watch for 2014 after rising a massive 68 places, breaking into the top 100 at number 86.

On the girls list new entries are taken by Ivy, Violet, Lottie, Lydia and Orla.

Hugo was the biggest climber amongst the top 100 boy’s names, springing from 100th place last year to 87th this time round, an improvement of 13 places.

Oscar also made huge leaps, rising from 19th to 7th, going up 12 places.

In contrast the name Callum has dropped from 63rd place last year to 44th in 2013, a fall of 19 places.

The girl’s name Elsie has taken the biggest leap on the girls top 100 list for 2013, climbing an incredible 22 places from 72 to 50. Whilst Ivy is the highest climber overall, rising 37 places to enter the chart at number 68 and in no doubt inspired by Beyonce and Jay-Z’s baby daughter Blue Ivy.

But Isabel has suffered the biggest drop going from 93rd place to 71 – a drop of 22 places.

Lisa Penney continues:

“Year after year we see new parents influenced by popular culture – with names made famous by people in the public eye like Joey Essex suddenly experiencing sharp rises in popularity.

“Generally we’ve recently seen the return of more ‘old-fashioned’ names with a vintage flavor as Ivy, Violet, Elsie and Teddy have all emerged as ones to watch for 2014.”
