Top Ten Tuesday: Books I’ve Been Avoiding

By Curlygeek04 @curlygeek04

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.  Today’s topic is books I’ve been avoiding, and why. To answer this question, I looked at the books that have been on my Goodreads TBR the longest.

Based on that list, here are the five types of books I’ve tagged as wanting to read, but haven’t followed up on.

  1. Classics: on my TBR list are Anna Karenina by Tolstoy, Bleak House by Dickens, Les Miserables by Hugo, and Don Quixote by Cervantes.  These also fall into the “dauntingly long” category.
  2. Dauntingly long books: in addition to the classics I mentioned, Murakami’s IQ84.
  3. Series books I haven’t kept up with: A Monstrous Regiment of Women by Laurie R. King, The Ask and The Answer by Patrick Ness, The Wise Man’s Fear by Patrick Rothfuss, The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon.  I generally don’t read series books right in a row, but if I let too much time go by, I probably won’t be going back.  Maybe that says something about how much I liked the original book, but not always.
  4. Nonfiction: I’m reading a lot more nonfiction these days, but there are a lot of books I hear about and then don’t read.  Examples here are Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof, Born Survivors by Wendy Holden, and Dark Money by Jane Mayer.
  5. Books I’ve Gotten in GiveawaysFirst Impressions by Charles Lovett, Thief’s Magic by Trudi Canavan. I’ve learned that free books sound great, especially when you win one, but when it wasn’t a book I chose, I’m unlikely to actually read it.  They clutter up my shelves instead, which is why I rarely enter giveaways anymore.

Are there any books on this list you’d recommend I read?  Or should I cull them from my TBR and donate them to a good cause?

What are your reasons for putting off a book?
