I missed last week’s Top Ten Tuesday, so I decided to use that topic this week instead. These are the Top Ten New-to-Me Authors in 2016.
- Lisa McInerney: for the fantastic The Glorious Heresies, one of my best reads this year and the Baileys Prize winner.
- Elizabeth McKenzie: for The Portable Veblen, also one of my favorite reads.
- Vera Brittain: for the powerful Testament of Youth, and for her work in World War I and supporting the feminist cause in the 1920’s.
- R. Carey: for The Girl with All the Gifts
- Bill Clegg: for Did You Ever Have a Family?
- Angela Flournoy: for The Turner House. 2016 seemed to be my year to read about dysfunctional families. This was a particularly good one.
- Charlie Jane Anders: for All the Birds in the Sky, a science fiction/fantasy book that was different from anything else I’ve read.
- Andria Williams: for one of my favorite historical fiction reads of the year, The Longest Night.
- Helen Phillips: for The Beautiful Bureaucrat and Some Possible Solutions.
- Chris Cleave: for Everyone Brave is Forgiven, a World War II novel with complex characters that stayed with me after I put it down.
And a few others that I wanted to mention:
- James S.A. Corey: I’m coming late to the Expanse series, but this year I read the first two books and I can’t wait to see more of the TV show.
- Madeline Ashby: for Company Town, not a perfect science fiction novel but one that kept me riveted anyway.
- Jackie Copleton: for A Dictionary of Mutual Understanding, a historical novel set in Nagasaki before and after World War II.
- Bonnie Sue Hitchcock: for The Smell of People’s Houses, a really good YA novel about teens in Alaska.
- Belinda Crawford: for Hero, a book that rose above my expectations of a YA science fiction novel.
