Top Five Friday: Five best water play toys for dogs
This post contains affiliate links to cool stuff! Cool- get it! LOL
Hazel and Keira love the water! Swimming in the Ottawa River is her favorite way to keep cool in the summer. Hazel likes to just walk into the river and lay right down. Some dogs require a little more mental stimulation than that. Over the years I've tried out some fun water play toys with my dogs. These are Keira and Hazel's top five dog toys for water, ranked from least likely to make them dunk their faces in, to most likely for her to submerge their entire heads into the river to retrieve it!
5. Kid pool
The ultimate water play toy for your dog is a pool of their own in the backyard. I can assure you, it will get dirty fast (see above). Hazel loved her pool, while Keira was a little more apprehensive about it, and would take a lot of convincing to get in. Hazel loved splashing around, bringing her toys in the pool, and doing her signature move- laying down in the water. You can even buy an affordable pool just for your dog and have it shipped to your home!
4. KONG Squeezz Stick
The KONG Squeezz Stick is so much fun because it bounces all different ways! It squeaks, it floats, and it's a safe stick- what more could your dog want? You have to be one tough chewer to puncture the squeaker in this toy, and as per KONG, it keeps squeaking after it's punctured anyway. It is also a safer alternative to playing fetch with a wooden stick, which is most dog's favorite.
3. Classic Chuckit! Ball
The old fashioned, durable, tested, and true orange Chuckit! ball is my dog's go-to water fetch toy. I personally like to buy the Recycled Remi Chuckit! ball made from pieces of recycled balls, but it is harder to see in the water than the classic orange ball. This ball is an oldie but a goodie. My dogs never get tired of it! I'm a big fan of the Chuckit! line of dog toys- and so are Hazel and Keira.
2. A stick
Full disclosure- if I'm telling the truth, a stick is definitely in my dog's top five water play 'toys.' I know it's not a toy you can buy your dog, but it is what it is. I'm breaking my own rules, but my dogs would be disappointed if I didn't add it to the list. They could be surrounded by toys and ignore them when they find a good stick. Fetch with a stick is a favorite water game. I always monitor my dogs closely when they are playing with sticks, and take them away if they start to chew them. Use with caution!
1. Kurgo Skipping Stone
The family favorite is the Kurgo Skipping Stone. It's exactly that- a floating dog toy you can skip across the surface of the water. This toy is a lot of fun for me too! I like to see how many skips I can get out of it. The dogs love that they can see it skip and glide across the water. Tap into your dog's instinctual love of the chase with this toy!
