Top 5 Favourite Sub-Genre in Horror

By Newguy

When it comes to horror films they can be broken down into many sub genres. Each person has a different favorite sub-genre of horror, some people like the ones that offer more scares others like to see how far the film makers can go. I personal enjoy most sub-genres and today I will be selecting my personal five favourites. What are your favorite sub-genres of horror and why do you enjoy them?

5. Found Footage

I am aware that this is sometimes the cheapest cheap of horror and we really have had a lot of stinkers from the genre. I fully believe that if this style of film is done correctly you do get a very good horror film. I like this style of film because it puts you in the front row of the action and gives you the chance to feel like you are going to be part of the group experiencing the horrors as they come. The general feel for these is lots of wondering around and lots of cheap jump scares before a flash bang wallop ending, but I think they could be more creative in the time they use for these type of films.

4. Creature Feature

When it comes to creature features we usually end up with a monster trying to hunt down a group of people but it could also go to the next level and end up with a full scale attack against an unstoppable monster. This genre is also got to be credit for the first icons in horror with Wolfman, The Mummy and Dracula.

3. Slasher

The slasher came along in the late 70s when we got Halloween, it was followed by Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. These three have become mega franchise and created horror icons. They also include a group of teenager or young adults getting caught doing things they shouldn’t (drugs, drinks or pre-marital sex) which when it first came on the scene was the message behind it.

2. Psychological

This is the type that will make you think and usually involves things happening off camera so you can only imagine the horror, we also don’t get to see the subject of the horror until very late and if we do see early it is only in glimpses. It would be fair to say that this is one that sticks with me longest because you keep thinking about what happened long after watching.

1. Ghost Investigation

This will come as unusual choice because this type of film can often come off as simple scares. This film will include a ghost or legend haunting one person who will have to figure out what happened to the ghost while getting clues through any sort of horror involved. I personally like this because I enjoy seeing how these turn out I like investigation films and they usually involve some sort of twist.
