I really do try to catch up with films that I have not seen before each year (and yes I still have a massive number of DVDs that have been sitting on my shelf for films I still haven’t watched yet) as I find this often to be such a good break from the films that are released at the cinema, as let’s face it certain times of year we seem to be getting the same thing over and over again and we all know March/April are awful months at the cinema. That was also why I set up the Best Picture Project in order to increase the quality of some of the films I watch. I think some of that will be clear in these 10 films I have picked that I am now pleased I have caught up with!
I always find the best thing about doing this top 10 list is that people are always shocked that I had never seen certain films up until this (or now last year).
I haven’t included any of the Bond films in the list but thought it was very appropriate to make sure that I mentioned that 2015 was the year that I officially caught up and have now seen every single Bond film! Something which was very trying and testing but I managed to complete the challenge of my Bondathon!
Capote (2005) Review
Quite possibly the best of Phillip Seymour Hoffman? In a haunting film that sticks with you.
Far from Heaven (2002) Review
This was one of those films that I have always wanted to watch as it just seemed very on edge and it does have so many different talking points.
The End of the Affair (1999) Review
What on earth is it with Ralph Fiennes he is just so intense in so many of his films, this one being no different as he is the lover of a wealthy woman.
When a Man Loves a Woman (1994) Review
An interesting film which kinda flips the roles as you would normally expect the man to do the things the woman did in this one!
Groundhog Day (1993) Review
I actually had my own Groundhog Day with this film as after I watched it for the first time I have found myself watching it over and over again.
Scent of a Woman (1992) Review
Pacino really showing his best here, fantastic performance and on screen persona.
The Prince of Tides (1991) Review
A truly unexpected journey which also made me respect Nolte more as had never been his biggest fan.
Chinatown (1974) Review
Yes I know terrible I had never seen this before when Jack Nicholson is my favorite actor!
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966) Review
A truly incredible film experience based on a play I could imagine the intensity of performances if it was on stage. Burton and Taylor are truly magnificent together.
Sunset Boulevard (1950) Review
Another incredibly acted film with some amazing moments to really show how you can drive yourself mad.
