You’ve heard it before: “The Internet is forever.” So you should know that when your friend posts a picture of you staggeringly drunk on Facebook, it may come back to haunt you. Businesses are now using social networking sites to scope out applicants…

To help promote this new concept of digital marketing, we recently updated the Wikipedia entry for the term and did our best to not only define digital marketing but to explain what it is as well as the players in this space. In the true collaborative spirit of Wikipedia, we invite you to add your own thoughts and ideas, as we too still adding and editing. Currently our definition is:

Customer relationship management (CRM) is an approach to managing a company’s interaction with current and potential future customers that tries to analyze data about customers’ history with a company and to improve business relationships with customers, specifically focusing on customer retention and ultimately driving sales growth. One important aspect of the CRM approach is the systems of CRM that compile data from a range of different communication channels, including a company’s website, telephone, email, live chat, marketing materials, and social media. Through the CRM approach and the systems used to facilitate CRM, businesses learn more about their target audiences and how to best cater to their needs. However, adopting the CRM approach may also occasionally lead to favoritism within an audience of consumers, resulting in dissatisfaction among customers and defeating the purpose of CRM.

The communication channel of choice for most businesspeople and used by the majority of internet users, email is a powerful tool you can leverage to reach members of your audience directly. Traditionally, email has gotten a bad rap for being spammy and promotional. However, by taking an inbound approach to email, you can use email to deliver helpful, personalized, and targeted content to your prospects which they’ll be pleased to received.

This is another one that involves requesting a demo before you can sign right up and get going on your next social media marketing campaign. It’s typically meant to be used by larger organizations that have big audiences and lots of engagement happening. More »

Hi Kevan, this was awesome! and great!, in step one I think it would be helpful if you pick the audience you want to serve first and build your social media campaign around that audience. This will facilitate how you mange your timing as you said you don’t need to be everywhere, just where you target audience is, thanks this was insightful.

I would focus on building your personal brand online and building a website right away that you can use as a testing ground for learning digital marketing skills. Most digital marketing programs are too theoretical and digital marketing is a fast evolving industries so you need to be constantly learning through active experimentation to become good enough to consistently make money.
