Maggie Keswick Jencks lived with advanced cancer for two years. During that time she used her experience to create a blueprint for a new type of care built around her belief that people should “not lose the joy of living in the fear of dying”. In November 1996 the first Maggie’s Centre opened in Edinburgh and what Maggie had planned became real and since then Maggie’s has continued to grow with 17 Centres at major NHS cancer hospitals in the UK, online and abroad.
Maggie’s offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends, offering a programme of support that has been shown to strengthen physical and emotional wellbeing.
Her message to embrace the joy of living has inspired Maggie’s Culture Crawl – a 15 mile night walk discovering cultural, architectural and artistic delights, raising funds and awareness to help people living with cancer.
London-based designer, Ab Rogers, has been appointed as Curator of Cultural Content for this year’s event and will be creating a series of cultural surprises to appear along the route. Ab comments; “this year’s Maggie’s Culture Crawl will be like no other. There will be a series of fully interactive interventions and micro activities involving food, performance, light and sound as well as extraordinary buildings to see and a beautiful route to walk. Walkers will be part of a vibrant, multi-coloured carnival on a cultural journey full of excitement and surprise”.
Online registration has now closed but you can still sign up tonight from 5.30pm at Victoria Embankment Gardens. Registration costs £40 and Maggie’s encourages everyone to raise as much money as they can through the event.
