I am grateful to The Big Debate and Elevation Network for inviting me to speak at an event to mark the start of The Big Debate’s 2013 tour at the Stephen Lawrence Centre last night.
The hall was packed with the leaders of tomorrow and filled me with hope. The majority of the audience were university students and it was a joy to debate with them.
A panel of myself, Labour’s Diane Abbott MP and parliamentary candidate Tulip Siddiq and Conservative Nick du Bois MP tackled the issue of voting, registering to vote and democratic participation. The event was chaired by Samuel Kasumu of Elevation Network.
But we also covered a wide range of questions from tuition fees and health to immigration.
To be at an event with so many smart (in both senses of the word), conscious and ambitious young people was inspiring.
I hope they took something from the debate; I know I did!
