Tokyo Olympics Can Be Averted, IOC Pressure on Sports Associations: Shinzo Abe

Tokyo Olympics 2020: Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said that it may be mandatory to postpone the Tokyo Olympics due to the corono virus epidemic.

After mounting pressure on the International Olympic Committee, he admitted on Monday that a decision could be taken to postpone the Olympics in view of the threat from Covid-19.

He said that the IOC is also under pressure from sports associations and athletes from many other countries.

After this statement by Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, it is now believed that the Tokyo Olympics will not be started by its scheduled time. The Olympic Games are to start from July 24.

Canada has clearly stated that it will not send its team to these games. The Government of IOC Japan will take the decision by talking to global sports officials, broadcasters and sponsors. IOC President Thomas Bak has written a letter to the players explaining why this decision is taking so long.

He wrote that, I know that in this unprecedented situation there will be many questions in your mind. I know that you will not feel that kind of practical attitude in this emotional time

Australian officials said – prepare for athletes 2021

Several countries, including the US, have sought to postpone it, but the IOC has not yet clarified its stand on it. Australian Olympic officials have said that it is now clear that the Tokyo Olympic Games will not be able to proceed as per their scheduled schedule.

So we have told all our athletes that they should now prepare for the 2021 Olympic Games. He said that the Australian team could not gather under changing circumstances at home and abroad due to the corona virus.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that four weeks are needed to decide whether to postpone the Games.

The pressure is increased due to these-

  • The American Swimming Association warned that swimmers would be vulnerable to contamination when they practiced.
  • The French Swimming Federation, the Norwegian Olympic Committee and the players also supported the postponement of the Olympics
  •  Spain’s athletics federation raises its voice to postpone the Games
  • The Athletics Federation of Britain also raised questions about the event in an atmosphere of uncertainty.
